Greetings, Winemakers!

Where does the time go? It is hard to believe that it's time again to fill your containers with quality wine juices from Walker's! We will be opening for the season on Thursday, September 22, at 9 AM with a reduced selection of juice this year.

We started pressing this year's crop on August 23. The hot dry summer has made the quality outstanding, but the supply is proving to be very limited! Within the first two days of pressing, we recognized a serious problem. Initially, all indications looked like this harvest would produce a typically average yield. The Seyval appeared to be coming back from the damage the vines suffered due to the extremely cold winters of the past two years. Unfortunately, we saw a historic drought this growing season which was the driest we have had since they started keeping records. On August 25, the USDA declared the 15 counties of Western NY (the entire region our grapes come from) a "primary natural disaster area" because of the drought. The crop estimates came in; and still, the crop was projected to be relatively normal.

Then we started harvest! Experienced growers with a good record of accurate estimating were proven to be way off. The tonnage was far lighter than expected; and even once the grapes arrived here, we saw the yield of gallons per ton drop by nearly 10%. By August 25, we stopped accepting winery orders for most varieties; and even then we had already accepted orders for more juice than we were going to have for several varieties. It is estimated that the crop yield, in general, is down roughly 30% from the estimated of just a month ago. Many of the varieties you have become accustomed to having will not be available this year. At the same time, we are introducing a few new ones. We are excited to offer some new varieties from Australia. These varieties come to us as fresh juice, harvested from Australia's South Easter grape growing region. The quality of these juices is exceptional and we look forward to hearing about the excellent wine you will make from them.

We are also making some varieties available in both bulk and "Hot-Packs" that previously were only available as hot-packed. If in doubt about what varieties are available, please check out our website or call before making the trip. Most varieties that are not available this year should be in good supply next year.

Our apple juice continues to be popular for making hard cider. We will continue to offer it, and all of the necessary supplies and information needed to make your own delicious hard cider, It will be available in both bulk and "Hot-Packs" like last year. The apple juice, as with ALL of our juices, in intended for winemaking only and is not suitable for fresh consumption.

Our 5 gallon "Hot-Pack" selections continue to be popular, both with customers buying them while here and with those ordering them for shipment by UPS. They require no refrigeration, transport safely, and are available all year, even when our sales room is closed. "Hot-Packs" may be ordered by phone, Monday through Friday from 9-5, or by e-mail from our website. PayPal is now available for these purchases. You may notice a slight across-the-board increase in the prices of these "Hot-Packs" along with the shipping costs. The New York State Department of Ag and Markets has instructed us to fill these 5 1/4 gallon containers to the brim to meet the New York State regulations for a stable shelf product. We had been filling them with 5 gallons of juice to allow for expansion during the primary fermentation.

"Pick your own" Concord grapes will be ready when we open and should be available into October.

WE DO NOT reserve or set aside any juices at any time.

From March through the end of June, it may be necessary to offer some (if not all) of our available juices only in "Hot-Packs" to maintain the quality you deserve and have come to expect from Walker's.

We do not accept credit cards. But will accept your personal checks or cash for your purchases.

We look forward to "pouring" your juice again this year!

Very truly yours,
THE WALKER'S
(Three generations at your service)
